Picturesque historic market towns, thatched cottages and quaint pubs dot this most rural of constituencies. From the sweeping chalk downlands of Cranbourne Chase to the patchwork of hedgerow-framed fields of the Blackmore Vale, North Dorset is the embodiment of Hardy’s Wessex. The towns of Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton, Gillingham and Blandford form the major conurbations of the constituency, Blandford being home to both the famous annual Great Dorset Steam Fair and also several notable breweries which keep much of Dorset well-watered. The iconic Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is one of the most recognisable and photographed scenes in Dorset.
